On January 14, 2021, Samsung Electronics filed a patent application with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) for a ‘Foldable electronic apparatus with a rotary camera disposed in hinge part’. The patent was released today, July 22, 2021. The 49-page documentation describes a clamshell phone, such as the Galaxy Z Flip.
The focus in this design is on the camera system. Samsung seems to see a chance to process the dual camera in the hinge. It should also be possible to rotate the camera, which can be directed forwards, upwards and backwards so that you can take pictures from different angles. From selfies to regular photo and video recordings.
Because the camera positioning has been changed, Samsung can provide this foldable smartphone with a larger cover display. The second display screen is significantly larger than with the current Z Flip and the expected Z Flip 3. This allows more content to be shown on the screen. This not only concerns incoming notifications and incoming calls, but also messages. For example, if you receive a WhatsApp message, you can answer it quickly without having to open the device.
However, there is a drawback, because the camera is incorporated in the hinge, it protrudes considerably when unfolded, so that you will not be able to lay the mobile phone flat on the table. When folded, the hinge is also a bit higher, which will increase the overall dimensions as well. With the current models, Samsung uses a so-called hide-away hinge, which disappears beautifully when you open the folding phone. Although this design has several advantages, the question is whether Samsung is willing to make these concessions.
Nevertheless, Samsung does seem to intend to increase the cover screen even further in the future. Six months ago, LetsGoDigital reported on a Galaxy Z Flip type smartphone which also integrated a larger cover screen and a triple camera.
Before that, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 will arrive first. This flip phone will be officially announced on August 11, 2021. You can probably buy the new model from the end of August. It is expected that Samsung will lower the suggested retail price this time, although exact pricing information is lacking at the time of writing, many assume that the clamshell will be priced at around €1300. The previous model cost $1500 at launch.
