iPhone 13 Pro – Screen replacement disables Face ID on iPhone 13

On Friday last week, Apple launched the new iPhone 13 series consisting of the four models: iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The company iFixit, which is known for unscrewing new technology products, has not surprisingly been on the spot to take apart the iPhone 13 Pro. This is to see what’s hidden inside – are there any new, exciting components? And how easy is it to repair your cell phone?

Face ID is disabled

Among other things, confirms iFixits demontering that the battery capacity is 3095 mAh, up from 2815 mAh on the iPhone 12 Pro, which contributes to the increased battery life in this year’s model.

iFixit has also come across another interesting detail. It turns out that Face ID – Apple’s advanced face recognition technology – does not work if the screen is replaced by a third party, ie a non-certified workshop.

According to the company, they did not get Face ID to work again after they changed the screen and now warn others against doing so.

– If you replace the screen at this time, Apple Face ID will kill unless they control the repair, iFixit warns.

At the same time, iFixit has been in contact with a certified repairman who states that they have been told by Apple that this is due to a bug that will be fixed in an upcoming update to iOS. Then it remains to be seen if that is the case.

Right to repair

In any case, this does not look good for Apple, as it both in the EU and The United States has voted to strike back at “right to repair”restrictions, ie the right to repair products you own.

In a Bloomberg-rapport from May it emerged how Apple has worked to crack down on the right to repair laws.

In Europe it was last year decided to introduce a labeling system which will provide consumers with information on how easy it is to carry out the repair of a product. France is already up and running and has rolled out a system for mobile phones, PCs and the like that shows repairability.

This will make it easier for consumers to choose a product that can be easily repaired if something happens.

Last year won Apple in court against a Norwegian mobile operator from Ski after the company sued the mobile operator for importing illegal copies of mobile screens.

Apple has so far not commented on the matter.
