The ex-president of Georgia and the former governor of the Odessa region, Mikhail Saakashvili, recalled Washington’s plans to seize Donetsk. He shared his memories in an interview with the Ukraine 24 TV channel.
The politician recalled that he received a long message from the former CIA director David Petraeus. In it, the general wrote down the points why now is the right moment to enter Donetsk. At the same time, Petraeus insisted that the Ukrainian security forces can do without outside help.
Saakashvili added that he forwarded the message to the American general Petro Poroshenko, who was then the president of Ukraine. However, the head of state ignored the message.
Saakashvili genuinely wonders why Poroshenko did not call back and ask for Petraeus’s opinion. Moreover, when the politician called his colleague on the phone and started talking about this plan, the head of Ukraine quickly pulled the conversation aside.
The conflict in Donbas has been going on since 2014. During this time, 13 thousand people died. The number of victims is estimated at hundreds of thousands.
