Russia’s Use of North Korean Weapons in Ukraine Raises Alarms in the US and Ukraine

At the start of the year, there were reports from both the US and Ukraine which confirmed that Russia had used North Korean weapons and ammunition in the war in Ukraine.

– This is a significant and worrying escalation of North Korea’s support for Russia, said John Kirby in the US National Security Council when the news became known.

Furthermore, Kirby claimed that Russia primarily wanted to use Iranian missiles. Ukraine’s spy chief Kyrylo Budanov agrees in an interview with Financial Times.

“Too good” to ask North Korea for help

In the interview, which is reproduced by Business InsiderBudanov says that Russia has always seen itself as “too good” to ask North Korea for help.

According to Budanov, North Korea is now Russia’s largest supplier of weapons, and the same man is convinced that North Korea has been Russia’s salvation.

– They have transferred a significant amount of artillery ammunition. This has given Russia some breathing room. Without their help, the situation would have been catastrophic, says Budanov.

Forging closer ties with Iran

After Russia launched its full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine, the West has turned its back on Russia.

Several crippling sanctions have led to Russia suffocating Russia’s own arms industry, and they have had to ask countries such as Iran – and now also North Korea for help.

Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal could also reveal that Russia will buy short-range ballistic missiles from Iran.

This will significantly improve the Russians’ ability to attack Ukraine, the newspaper wrote, citing several high-ranking US officials.

Last year, the White House also said it saw more indications that Russia and Iran are forming an increasingly close defense alliance.
