MOSCOW – Parliamentarian Russia recently issued a stern warning to Poland amid rising tensions at the border Belarus saying that everything will end badly.

Andrey Gurulyov, a member of Russia’s state Duma and former military commander, warned Poland against stationing its troops near the Russian exclave in Kaliningrad. He also claims without evidence that Polish authorities are trying to seize control of parts of Ukraine. This was revealed during an appearance on Russian state television.

His remarks follow weeks of tension between Poland and the Wagner Group, a paramilitary organization that previously fought alongside Russian forces in the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Wagner’s group was exiled to Belarus in June following their attempted mutiny against Russia’s military leadership over a stagnant invasion of Moscow. Wagner’s presence in Belarus has raised concerns about destabilization in eastern and central Europe, including in Poland, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Gurulyov urged Russian authorities to take a hardline stance if Poland moved its troops near Kaliningrad, although Polish authorities have not expressed any interest in controlling the area.

“The second topic is maintaining Kaliningrad as an exclave. The message is very clear: ‘Friends, if God forbid you go anywhere towards our Kaliningrad region, everything will end badly for you. This is probably the way it should be,” he was quoted as saying. NewsweekSunday (20/8/2023).

Gurulyov’s remarks were translated and posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, by The Kremlin Yap Saturday morning.

While Poland has yet to move troops near Kaliningrad, it has moved thousands of troops near the Belarusian border amid growing Wagner presence in the region.
