Russian Deputy Chairman Warns of Potential Use of Nuclear Weapons in Response to Ukrainian Counterattack

Atlanta, USA (CNN) — Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said Sunday that Russia may have to use its nuclear weapons if the Ukrainian counterattack succeeds and ends with the “seizure of part of Russia’s territory,” he wrote on Telegram.

His comments come just hours after the Russian Defense Ministry accused Kiev of attacking the Russian capital, Moscow, with drones.

The ministry said that three drones were intercepted on Sunday, but a commercial project and a market in the west of the capital were hit.

And the former Russian president said: “Just imagine that the attack … with the support of NATO succeeded and ended with the plundering of part of our land. We will then have to use nuclear weapons by virtue of the provisions of the Russian presidential decree.”

And Medvedev said: “There will be no other solution,” and continued: “The enemies must pray that our fighters do not allow the world to burn with nuclear flames.”

Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia had transferred its first batch of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, claiming they were placed there for “deterrence”.

At the Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin said that the rest of the tactical nuclear weapons that Russia intends to transfer to Belarus will be transferred “by the end of summer or the end of the year.”

In response, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said at the time that the US “has seen no reason to adjust its nuclear posture nor any indication that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon.”
