Russia, willing to expand its diplomatic presence in Latin America

(EFE).- Russia is willing to expand its diplomatic presence in Latin America if the host countries express the corresponding interest, said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

“Latin America and the Caribbean, in our understanding, is a separate layer of civilization, one of the centers of a renewed world system that is in the process of formation,” Riabkov said in an interview with the Interfax agency.

He stressed that even in the current geopolitical situation, which he described as “very turbulent,” Moscow receives signals from “many Latin American capitals about the need to strengthen the partnership with Russia, and this despite the obstacles posed by the West.”

The vice minister highlighted that “no Latin American country has joined the policy of anti-Russian sanctions” due to the war in Ukraine.

He added that Russia, in turn, is prepared to have the level of relations with Latin American countries for which they themselves are willing.

Riabkov indicated that if Latin American states are interested, it is possible for Russia to expand its embassies and consulates and open new representations where there are none.

“We will work on it, although it is not a cheap matter, frankly, the region is geographically remote, but we will continue working anyway,” said the deputy minister.

He added that in recent years there has been an increase in Russia’s diplomatic presence in areas that are popular with Russian tourists. “But in this sense we are at the beginning of the journey,” she admitted.
