Russia will burn gas instead of deliveries to Europe – minister

Gazprom will soon fill all its UGS facilities with gas

The backlash for pressure on the European Union from the Russian side is already shrinking, Herman Galushchenko stressed.

Russia is using natural gas supplies to put pressure on Europe. But the storage will soon be full, and so the Russians will simply have to burn their gas. Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko said this in an interview for Interfax-Ukrainereleased on Tuesday, July 19th.

According to the minister, Canada and Germany are now creating a dangerous precedent by the transfer of a turbine for Gazprom.

“For the Russians, the very fact that they pressed two G7 countries is important. Because tomorrow they will demand something else, and the day after tomorrow they will say: let’s turn on Nord Stream 2,” said Galushchenko.

He stressed that this turbine has nothing to do with the volume of supply, because until recently only three turbines were in operation, and this did not interfere with gas pumping.

Galushchenko recalled that when certain companies succumbed to Gazprom’s blackmail and began to pay in rubles, this did not guarantee them deliveries.

“If they really decide to stop deliveries to Europe, they will come up with anything – an explosion, a new repair,” he said.

But, according to the minister, Europe should understand that the backlash for putting pressure on the EU among the Russians is already shrinking.

“How long will it take them to finish filling up their storage facilities with 76 billion cubic meters, and the question will arise, where to put the gas? They have to supply it somewhere, or just lose it. I won’t be surprised if the Russians just burn it, although it will be too much for them,” the head of the Ministry of Energy summed up.

As a reminder, at the end of 2022 the share of Russian gas in Europe may become minimal for 20 years. Russia will only be able to meet the EU’s gas needs by 20%, experts say.

It was also reported that Gazprom cut exports by almost a third. In five and a half months, Russia exported less than 65 billion cubic meters of gas.
