“Russia Plans to Relocate Workers at Ukraine’s Largest Nuclear Power Plant, Energatom Warns of Catastrophic Shortage”

Ukraine’s nuclear power company Energatom claims that Russia plans to relocate 2,700 workers at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.

According to The Guardian now warns the Ukrainian company against a catastrophic shortage of personnel at the nuclear power plant in the occupied part of southern Ukraine. Russian forces took control of the nuclear power plant shortly after the invasion of the country.

Enargatom says that removing personnel from the nuclear power plant will worsen the problems that the power plant is already under.

The Russian-installed governor of the region ordered the evacuation of civilians in the region last Sunday, including in areas where many employees of the nuclear power plant live.

The nuclear power plant is one of the 10 largest nuclear power plants in the world. While the six reactors have been shut down for several months, they still need power and qualified personnel to operate critical cooling systems and other safety features.

Fighting near the plant has led to fears of a potentially catastrophic event like that at Chernobyl, in northern Ukraine, where a reactor exploded in 1986 in what is seen as the world’s worst nuclear accident.

Serious

Shortly after Russian forces took over the plant, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned that personnel shortages at the plant would seriously compromise the ability to maintain safety at the plant.

The IAEA has deployed a handful of employees at the plant in an attempt to safeguard nuclear safety at the power plant.

Russian authorities in the region have stepped up to evacuate residents in the area due to the expected Ukrainian spring offensive. Analysts have said that Ukraine may focus its counteroffensive on the Zaporizhzhya region.
