Ruber International Hospital, 30 years caring for health

The prestigious and renowned Professor and doctor Juan Jose Vidal Peláez on April 1, 1991, he founded the Women’s Unit at the Ruber International Hospital in Madrid. Composed of a multidisciplinary team of 13 gynecologists experts in the different subspecialties of gynecology, also formed by midwives, nurses, clinical psychologist, physiotherapists, nutritionist, secretaries and clinical assistants, etc. The Women’s Unit offers personalized and immediate assistance and access to the best techniques and technologies available. It is a pioneer in the use of different diagnostic and surgical procedures in obstetrics and gynecology.

According to the director of the Women’s Unit of the Ruber International Hospital, Dr. Juan Vidal, my approach has always been aimed at helping women in the different stages of their life, “puberty, adolescence, maturity, pregnancies, menopause and old age.”

All this with the highest technology available and the best medical and surgical treatments, says Dr. Vidal, “one of the greatest transformations in recent years we have seen in the treatments of gynecological and breast cancer with minimally invasive surgery, of infertility and gynecosesthetics ”.

“The use of PET-CT to detect tumor metastases or the location of sentinel nodes in cases of the breast and genital tract”

Radiological and nuclear medicine techniques have been a fundamental role for the diagnosis and treatment of gynecological processes, “such as 3D and 4D ultrasound, essential in prenatal diagnosis, the latest generation scan and magnetic resonance imaging, high resolution, the use of PET-TAC to detect tumor metastases or the location of sentinel lymph nodes in cases of the breast and the genital tract ”, emphasizes the doctor. To all this – the expert continues – we must add the current surgical instruments, which allow laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries to be performed.

During these 30 years, the Women’s Unit continues to pay special attention to preventive medicine. “In a specialty like ours, it is essential to act preventively on several fronts. One of them is to give advice to avoid sexually transmitted diseases, mainly those human papillomavirus (HPV), who are responsible for cervical cancers. We also advise to avoid the indiscriminate use of hormonal contraceptives, assessing the risks and benefits of such treatments and we carry out an exhaustive control of pregnancies to avoid diseases such as diabetes and hypertension and prevent premature births ”, explains Juan Vidal.

Progress in medicine in recent years has been continuous, both in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, “that is why our goal is to incorporate them as soon as there is scientific evidence of their usefulness,” says the director of the Women’s Unit.

Renowned specialists in each area make up the Women’s Unit of the Ruber International Hospital in Madrid. It is the case of doctors Julio Álvarez Bernardi and José Rubio Valtueña, experts in gynecological oncology “capable of treating, in most cases, cancers of the genital tract through minimally invasive surgery such as laparoscopies and hysteroscopies”, indicates Vidal. “The diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer is handled by Dr. Esther Suárez Agustín,” says the doctor.

The Women’s Unit has performed assisted reproduction treatments, always using the latest techniques available in this area.

Likewise, for the early diagnosis and treatment of the most frequent types of cancer in women, cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer, “is the person in charge, Dr. Alfonso Duque Frischkorn, to detect sexually transmitted diseases through colposcopies , liquid cytologies and bacteriological smears ”.

Since its inception, the Women’s Unit has performed assisted reproduction treatments, always using the latest techniques available in this field. Cycles of insemination, in vitro fertilization, IVF with preimplantation genetic diagnosis, egg donation and cryopreservation cycles. According to Juan Vidal, Dr. Elena Meliá Fullana is the Medical Director of Assisted Reproduction of the Women’s Unit and together with Dr. Vega Cabezuelo Sánchez, they are part of the Reproduction Unit of the Ruber International Hospital.

“To treat any possible functional disorder in women, from the first period and control the different changes and problems that occur during menopause, is Dr. María Teresa Martin Pedraza, which is also responsible for gynecoesthetics, an area that is growing in demand, ”acknowledges the specialist.

The psychological problems of women in all stages of life are dealt with by the unit’s clinical psychologist, Elena Iracheta.

“Pregnancy control and preparation for childbirth have always been essential in the daily work of all the doctors in the unit. At the forefront is Dr. Ángel Lorenzo Álvarez, a pioneer in the introduction of the non-invasive prenatal test (TPNI) ”, adds the head of the Women’s Unit.

Professor Juan Vidal emphasizes that the psychological problems of women in all stages of life are dealt with by the unit’s clinical psychologist, Elena Iracheta.

“This great multidisciplinary team is completed by the recently hired gynecologist, specialist in menopause and general gynecological check-ups, Dr. Sebastián Sessa and two external gynecologists, the doctors Nuria López and Isabel Rodríguez-Piñeiro. Physiotherapists such as Inmaculada Camisón and Pilar Cortés, specialized in the prevention of pelvic floor disorders to avoid urinary incontinence and prolapse of the genital tract, nutritionist Sara Romero, midwives, nurses and assistants, as well as the public relations of the unit, Fatima Labaig ”, concludes Dr. Juan Vidal.
