Frankfurt After two knee operations and a break of over a year, Roger Federer wants to attack again. In March, the superstar is aiming for his comeback – and is aiming high.

The fire is still burning in Roger Federer, even the long period of suffering has not changed that. Perhaps lifting the gold-plated Challenge Cup in Wimbledon for the ninth time, fighting for an Olympic medal in Tokyo – dreams like these motivated the tennis superstar last year full of pain and setbacks. “I want to celebrate big victories again,” said the Swiss now: “And for that I am ready to go the long, hard road.”

His journey was long and hard. The Grand Slam record champion has not played a match on the tour for over a year, he had to undergo knee operations twice – now Federer wants to know again at the age of 39. At the ATP tournament in Doha from March 8th to 13th, he is aiming for his comeback, as he told Swiss radio SRF on Tuesday.

“I like to play tennis for life,” assured Federer: “In the last few months I have given a lot in rehab and fitness. I had to go through the bottom, but I always enjoyed it.” The maestro’s passion is unbroken.

Federer actually wanted to return to the Australian Open (from February 8th). There, where he was last seen on the tour in January 2020 in the semi-final defeat against Novak Djokovic. But the appointment came too early despite the three-week postponement. Now he is physically almost 100 percent again, said Federer, in the past six months there have been no more setbacks.

In December, at a Swiss award ceremony, he sowed slight doubts as to whether he would return at all. “If it should have been that for me, then this is an unbelievable end point”, he said there, a shock went through the tennis world – but Federer imagines the end differently.

This year he is aligning everything to Wimbledon, the Olympic Games in Tokyo and the US Open in New York – it goes without saying that Federer doesn’t just want to play on the largest of all tennis stages, given a 20-time Grand Slam champion. However, he would not “try pathologically to stay on the tour,” he emphasized.

Because Federer doesn’t just have sporting dreams. “I want to be able to go skiing with the kids and with Mirka. Or go hiking, play basketball or start ice hockey,” he said: “I need a good body for that, and I don’t want to hit it against the wall.”
