Berlin – 70 bands in three days on three stages: Rock am Ring in the Eifel and Rock im Park in Nuremberg start today. The two music festivals are among the largest in Germany: This year, the organizers are expecting around 70,000 visitors at Rock am Ring – around 60,000 at Rock im Park. The same bands will be playing at both festivals at different times.

Headliners this year are the rock bands Kings of Leon, Die Toten Hosen and the Foo Fighters. Incidentally, this year almost 30 percent of the artists are female – twice as many as in the previous year, said a Rock-im-Park spokeswoman.

Last year there was criticism of the low proportion of women at numerous rock spectacles. Among other things, the comedian Carolin Kebekus had organized an all-female festival in Cologne as a protest – just one day after Rock am Ring and Rock im Park.

Music fans have to dig deeper into their pockets

But that’s not the only difference to the events in previous years, because the ticket prices have risen sharply: a ticket for three days of Rock im Park and Rock am Ring costs up to 300 euros. That’s about 70 euros more in the same price category than last year. “We have price increases of 45 percent in many areas,” says spokeswoman Carolin Hilzinger. It is only possible to a limited extent to absorb this otherwise.

Music fans will generally have to dig deeper into their pockets this summer, because Stephan Benn from the Liveinitiative NRW cultural association estimates that ticket prices for festivals have risen by around 30 percent on average. However, there is no precise overview. According to him, the higher wages, for example for technicians, security services and catering staff, have a particularly strong impact. In addition, according to Bernd Schweinar from the Association for Pop Culture in Bavaria, there are rising costs for energy and technology as well as higher fees.

A small consolation for music fans: At least this weekend the weather should play along, because according to the German Weather Service (DWD) it should be sunny and dry – both in the Eifel and in Nuremberg.
