Leipzig – Christmas time, what a wonderful time! Singer and entertainer Gunther Emmerlich (79) is also looking forward to the contemplative days. It’s not surprising that he sometimes plays the role of Santa Claus. He told how some children reacted to this in the MDR “Riverboat”.

White hair, white beard – if the role of Santa Claus is tailor-made for you, it is the native Thuringian who achieved fame as an opera singer and TV star in the GDR.
The Dresden resident is THE role model of a Santa Claus, according to moderator Kim Fisher (54), who had previously steered the conversation in a funny way towards funny experiences with Santa Claus – to everyone’s amusement.
“I think I was four or maybe three and I peed on Santa’s lap because I was so excited,” she said frankly, making the whole audience laugh.

But back to Emmerlich: “I am Santa Claus,” he grinned mischievously at the 54-year-old. He is only a part-time singer and presenter.
He remembered that he first had to take on the role as a substitute when he was 15 years old. “They dressed me terribly; I had my brother-in-law’s leather coat on backwards. I had a pot holder as a beard and something like that.”

His nephew would normally be able to recite all the Christmas carols and poems, but at that moment he was so frightened when he saw Emmerlich that he sang the little Christmas song “A bird comes flying”.
But apparently the entertainer didn’t always convince all children of his acting skills, as his granddaughter was much more skeptical. “I came in and then Antonia-Luise said to her mother, i.e. to my daughter, ‘That’s grandpa!'”
Good advice was expensive in order to be able to convince the girl. Finally, he simply complained about himself, that he was never home and that he (as Santa Claus) urgently needed to have a word with Grandpa.
Riverboat forensic doctor Michael Tsokos on “gully deaths”: “It’s a phenomenon of the times!”
“And from that moment on she thought, ‘He’s not going to kill himself’. And then she believed in Santa Claus again,” said the 79-year-old. Just saved again.
“Politicians work like that,” co-moderator Wolfgang Lippert (71) finally interjected, much to everyone’s amusement.
