Riga observes Palm Sunday with a palm tree procession.

The participants in the procession were holding palm branches and pods. Similar to how Jesus was welcomed in Jerusalem before his crucifixion.

“We are also trying to survive this process in our parish with a mass in such a long procession. And the very essence of the procession is to show the people living here in our district around the Mara pond that, yes, we are a living congregation, we are on the way with the congregation, we are on the way to the kingdom of God together with Jesus, and that is the meaning of the procession,” says the rector of the Riga Albert parish, Krišjānis Dambergs.

Palm branches for the procession were ordered in Italy. Latvian Television observed that dozens of people, including many families with children, took part in the march. Some patients of the nearby Stradiņa hospital also joined the march.

On Palm Sunday, Christian traditions are intertwined with folk traditions. While the faithful gathered in the churches, many went in search of poplar branches to beat the householders with them, wishing for health. Palm Sunday is also a reminder that spring is just around the corner.
