Riga Festival: A Colorful Concert of Bach’s Baroque Masterpieces

As part of the “Riga Festival” organized by “Latvijas Koncerti”, on July 13, the music of the German baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach will be heard in the Small Guild. The timbrali concert promises to be colorful, because together with the wonderful soprano of Ilze Grævele-Skaraine and the organ posivit played by Ilze Reine, the audience will hear the baroque cello played by Māra Botman and the entire range of oboes used by Bach – baroque oboe, oboe of love and the oboe hunting, which will be played by Ieva Niemane.

“The main source of inspiration for this program is Johann Sebastian Bach, because each of the concert participants has their own reasons for loving his music. Undeniably, organists, as direct descendants of the great improviser, have an unfathomably rich heritage. Bach’s 6 suites for solo cello are often called the “Bible” of the cellist, and the words of the Holy Scriptures dressed in his music appeal to the audience when performed by singers. On the other hand, the oboe is the instrument that Bach most often used as an obligatory instrument together with the soloist.

In the center of the program – arias from cantatas and passions, for a soloist with a mandatory instrument. The baroque cello and positive are the most important accompaniments for soloists, but these two instruments will also show themselves in solo pieces. Although the major part of the concert consists of music written for the original instruments, there will also be a couple of overdubs for just such a composition of instruments, which reflects the historical practice of playing music with the available resources, adjusting instruments of appropriate tessitura. Although they have made music together in twos and threes, we will be making music in this composition for the first time, and this is a long-awaited meeting in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. The mood of the program is a wide spectrum – both joy of life and energy, as well as contemplation, pain and comfort,” oboist Ieva Nīmane says about the concert.

What is the most extreme thing you have done in your life?
Balloon flight.

One of the most touching moments in life…
Probably when my children say something sweet, from the heart. But in general – when driving over the Akmens or Vanšu bridge: the big Latvian flag on the AB dam. Almost always, moving to tears.

What inspires you to work?
Nature. Silence. As a creative person, creative thoughts come to me in silence.

What are your healthy habits?
Winter swimming in the lake.

What are your bad habits?
I really like muffins…

What is the most valuable lesson learned in life?
Live today, enjoy life, sometimes doing nothing, and don’t blame yourself for it.

A book or film that you would recommend others to see / read.
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. Little Miss Sunshine (2006), dir. Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris

What music do you listen to?
Mostly related to the profession – ancient music and traditional music. But good punk rock, remembering the youth, also works.

I guess I spend my money very wisely, but sometimes I happen to buy something or a dress on the spur of the moment, which I never wear or use.

Place and time in which you would like to live?
I would like 17th-century Italy, Venice, or 18th-century France, specifically for music and cuisine because, but then I remember about the dentist’s services in those days, so I say – now, here in Latvia.
