Revealing the Hidden Blosne Stream: Rennes Métropole’s Plan to Uncover the Neglected Waterway

Many of the residents who live there probably don’t know it. But the popular district of Blosne takes its name from the stream that flows at its feet. The watercourse, which has its source in Domloup, is clearly visible in certain municipalities such as Chantepie but disappears completely from the landscape as soon as it approaches Rennes and its ZUP, to resurface at Saint-Jacques-de- la-Lande before flowing into the Vilaine. Whose fault is it ? To urbanization, obviously!

Since the construction of the southern ring road at the end of the 1960s, the stream has flowed through an imposing concrete casing for approximately four kilometers. Following the route of the ring road, Blosne is invisible to the eyes of the people of Rennes. But maybe not for long! As part of its “biodiversity and water” strategy, Rennes Métropole launched a study to discover the watercourse. “We got into the habit of hiding the water. At that time, we were doing everything pipes,” recalls Pascal Hervé, deputy vice-president for water, recalling the full powers granted to the car sixty years ago.

Allow water to overflow if necessary

The problem with this “piping” of the stream is that it degrades the quality of its water and neutralizes all biodiversity over several kilometers. It also prevents any natural overflow which could prove very useful in the event of flooding. “We know that we will probably not be able to discover it entirely but we want to see what possibilities we can consider,” recognizes Pascal Hervé, who knows that this project will not be started before the end of the mandate in 2026. The question of Land acquisition already promises to be tricky.

In Ille-et-Vilaine, only 3% of surface water is considered “in good ecological condition”. In February, the metropolis adopted its “biodiversity and water” strategy with the ambition of improving the situation. A long document of intentions that French communities love. To be continued.
