Retired Doctors and Nurses Volunteer at Red Cross Clinic, Serving Over 2,800 Patients Annually

Retired doctors serve as volunteers in the Red Cross clinic, an association supported by ten municipalities.

And they even followed a course to learn history, universal principles, national and supranational projects of the Red Cross. There are six doctors and ten nurses, men and women, who are in charge of the clinic which is open 365 days a year, including solemn holidays, from 6pm to 7pm (telephone number: 031.948711) and last year it received 2,830 patients for services such as injection therapies, small medications, removal of stitches and removal of ear wax.

The initiative

A curious fact: there are over 40 patients on the waiting list for the removal of the “plug” in the clinic coordinated by Carmen Broggi and his right arm Roman Angelretired nurses after a long experience in care and assistance.

And it is part of Dr.’s heritage Eugenio Aiani his long experience as a family doctor, as well as mayor of Faloppio, president and councilor in the Unione Terre di Frontiera.

«In the last two months, I have been absent from the Cri to replace a sick colleague in a Como facility – says Doctor Aiani – but I want to return. There is a need and I am available.”

Many years ago, as soon as he graduated, he volunteered for the Red Cross in Como and he still talks about it like one talks about youthful loves. Senior doctor and volunteer: is love for the profession like an unquenchable thirst? «I offer my time and my skills – he underlines – But I also receive a lot from human relationships. Of course, it is necessary to prescribe an antibiotic, for example, but in medicine, contact with people is fundamental.”

All the volunteer doctors and nurses here in the Red Cross are like this, appreciated for their science and conscience, but above all because, as they have always done, they know how to treat people as people and not as numbers. «I understand my colleagues working in the area or in the hospital, I know the difficulties, the discomfort in which they are put by the system and at university you don’t learn human relations – he explains – But I notice people who are increasingly disoriented: sometimes, a joke, a presence is enough to make them feel better.”

The experience

Health director is Maurizio Tettamanti, origins from Uggiasi, super manager head of department in Ats Insubria. He retired two years ago; he attends the history faculty at university and is a volunteer leader in Cri. Just 50 years ago, as a medical student, he volunteered for the Cri of Uggiate, he even got his ambulance license, it was an important experience, he says.

Doesn’t his spirit of solidarity leave him, enough to return to serving his own people and normal people with their daily needs? «It’s the least I can do – says the doctor – The Red Cross carries out a great function; volunteers are invaluable, but they are subject to rules, protocols and procedures. It is also my job to follow this aspect.”
