The German court announced on Tuesday that it continues to investigate a case of five premature babies injected with morphine at a clinic in Ulm, in southern Germany, having released a nurse who had been detained.
The nurse was detained for four days and remains, along with five other colleagues who worked the night of the baby’s intoxication, a suspected crime.
“These six people are suspected because of their proximity to the babies at the time of the incident”, Ulm prosecutor’s spokesman Michael Bischofberger explained, adding that none of the suspects will return to work at the hospital for as long as the investigation continues.
However, the investigation was opened to “all directions” and “no leads will be excluded”.
The facts go back to December, when five premature babies presented, at the same time, acute respiratory problems.
Although none of the babies suffered sequelae from the incident, according to the hospital, analyzes revealed that the five had unjustified traces of morphine in the body.
The hospital filed a complaint on January 17 and investigators searched the team’s lockers and lockers that day at the maternity hospital, discovering a injection of breast milk with morphine into a nurse’s locker.
Ulm’s prosecutor’s office accused the nurse of unjustifiably injecting morphine into the five babies, seriously jeopardizing the children’s health and reported that the young woman – who has always denied the charges – was in remand at the end of last week.
Justice remains unexplained for the presence of a syringe of breast milk in the nurse’s locker, without any refrigeration and at risk of spoiling. “It’s strange,” admitted Bischofberger.
However, Attorney General Christof Lehr apologized and said he was sorry for the nurse’s premature detention at a press conference today.
The clinic, in turn, apologized for the “incident” and also expressly apologized to the babies and their families.
