Regent of Karawang on the revolt in Rengasdengklok: We were attacked

Jakarta, CNNI Indonesia

Regent Karawang Cellica Nurrachadiana regrets the riots in Rengasdengklok Market, Wednesday (7/12). The mob threw stones at Cellica and his entourage who were about to visit the market.

He said his presence was to discuss with the traders about the arrangement of the Rengasdeklok market.

However, Cellica said, his intention was met with the throwing of stones, firecrackers, glass bottles and wooden blocks. Indeed, according to him, there are people who wield samurai and sharp weapons.

As a result of the riot, Cellica said, a policeman was injured in the head by being hit by a stone and a broken bottle.

“Dozens of young people force-fed liquor were used as shields to attack us,” Cellica wrote on his personal Instagram account.

According to him, so far his party has conducted awareness-raising activities for four months to merchants. Apart from that, he said, the government is also easing funding down to kiosk prices.

Cellica said she and the DPRD chairman, Dandim, Kajari, the deputy police chief and the regional secretary came to the market to talk to the traders.

“But because we are rewarded with violence,” he said.

“From the bottom of my heart, I hope the traders of Dengklok Market can see more clearly the problems of Dengklok Market which has been dirty, congested, smelly and dirty for decades,” Cellica said.

Traders at Rengasdengklok Market reject plans to move to a new location. They plan to be transferred to Rengasdengklok Proclamation Market.
