More and more governments are making plans to ban cars with combustion engines as used in Formula 1 from the everyday street scene in the medium term. The pressure on the various car manufacturers, and therefore also the Formula 1 engine suppliers Honda, Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault, is therefore slowly increasing, so Red Bull team boss Christian Horner suspects in conversation with RaceFans.
“Because of that pressure, the cost will become a major issue for all engine suppliers. It certainly does not only play a role at Honda. Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari will also have the same challenges,” the Brit believes. Honda indicated earlier that its future in sport largely depends on the cost, and that they would like it to go down.
Although the budget cap will be introduced next season, this does not change much to the current state of affairs with regard to the engines, because the development costs do not fall under the budget cap: “Formula 1 is currently focusing very much on reducing the costs for the development of the chassis, but nothing has changed in the motor field. “
“This is worrying for Formula 1, especially in view of developments in the automotive industry. I think it is crucial for Formula 1’s life that motor costs are reduced,” said Horner.
