Red Bull prepared the work for the RB20 with Pérez and Dennis

There was an RB19 regular and a world champion testing for Red Bull today, in Abu Dhabi.

On the one hand, Sergio Pérez completed 117 laps (4th fastest time) in his car, while Jake Dennis, the Formula E champion and Red Bull development driver, drove a little more (124 laps, 13th fastest).

Participating in the Pirelli tests, Sergio Pérez spoke of a “very positive day, because there was still a lot to learn” on his Red Bull, contrary to appearances.

“It was important to take the time needed to ride on track – and I rode more than twice the race distance today. I am satisfied with the work we have accomplished. Especially after a race here, everything is still very fresh and the circuit was very representative, especially in the afternoon, so it was a productive test. We’ve gathered some good information for next season and it’s a great way to end such a dominant year. »

When asked if tests like this could have impacted his season if allowed mid-year, Perez said his course would have been ” very different “.

“Nowadays there are no tests and even during the free ones you are so limited with the things you can play with, because of the lack of time and tires. »

“But I think overall I’m grateful for the difficulties I had because it taught me a lot about the car, about the philosophy of Red Bull, about much more than the concept of the car and I I really hope it pays off next year. »

Jake Dennis, the pilot of the Milton Keynes simulator, took part in the young pilot tests… and he visibly came out with a big smile!

“What an incredible car!” It was a very special day for me. In FP1 you’re just trying to survive, whereas today you can push the limits a little more and really understand the car. And I think that’s what we did. Checo and I collected a lot of data for the team. »

“Obviously my role today was a bit different to Checo, but from my point of view we have a lot of data to bring back to the simulator, to try and improve things for the RB20 and development in general. I enjoyed every lap, it was a great day. »

Gianpiero Lambiase, the director of engineering, gave a less enthusiastic but more technical update on the lessons learned by Red Bull from this day. Because there is always something to understand and improve, even on the most successful F1 of all time…

“We achieved everything we hoped for today. For Checo it was about sorting out a few things he still had doubts about throughout the season, which we did and got some really good data. »

“For Jake, it was about getting even more familiar with the car. We looked at several compromises between mechanical and aerodynamic testing which he can then use to provide us with feedback for his stints in the simulator, which is vital for us as we develop for 2024.”
