Buy a used car at auction at a cheaper price than a dealer? Try checking first

Is buying a used car at an auction cheaper than a showroom? Usually when the open bid or opening price is offered it tends to be lower than the market price.

Auction participants will bid in certain multiples, — JBA Indonesia has provisions for auction participants bidding on used cars in multiples of IDR 500 thousand. After that, the auction winner will be determined after daring to offer the highest price.

Sales & Operational General Manager of PT JBA Indonesia, Johan Wijaya, said that the price of cars that have been hammered at auction is generally cheaper than the price on the used car market.

“The highest (auction car price) is cheaper than the traders on the market. Those who participated as traders, the man who won the highest auction price, also had a price below the used car market,” said Johan in Kalideres, West Jakarta, Tuesday (28/ 11/2023).

Detikcom had the opportunity to observe several used cars being auctioned. For example, the 2020 Daihatsu Sigra DM/T has a limit or initial value of IDR 61 million with odometer information of 28,078 kilometers (km), BPKB-STNK available, tax has been off since December 8 2021, grade B interior, grade C exterior and grade B engine. The highest price during the auction process reached IDR 67 million.

Another model is the 2017 Suzuki Ertiga SDX, metallic gray with automatic transmission. The condition is explained by the odometer reaching 79,889 km, tax notice since September 14 2023, condition of the interior, engine and exterior grade B. The initial value was IDR 89 million, during the auction the final price was determined to be IDR 123 million.

Or an even younger model, for example the 2023 Honda WR-V RS A/T new 3,055 kilometers. The condition of the interior, exterior and engine is grade B. The initial price was set at IDR 231 million. The final auction price bid reached IDR 242 million.

Please note that these three cars do not include an additional fee of 1.1 percent of the price. Plus an administration fee of IDR 3 million for cars whose price is below IDR 500 million.

Johan admitted that currently the majority of participants who win auctions come from used car traders.

“97 percent of traders, three percent end user. End user there are also those who bring it. Usually the end user who buys the unit is ready, maybe gradingher, grading B,” he said.
