Record number of players to the Netherlands in summer transfer period | NOW

In the past transfer period, a record number of football players have made the switch to the Netherlands. The KNVB reports Wednesday that it concerns 211 players who came to the Eredivisie or Kitchen Champion Division from abroad.

It has never happened before that so many players went to the Netherlands in the summer transfer period, which was spread over two periods this year due to the corona crisis (July 1-July 21 and August 5-October 6). The numbers have gradually increased in recent years, with 177 transfers from abroad in the summer of 2019. Now there are 34 more.

In the Netherlands, fewer transfers were recorded than was the case in the last summers. 229 players switched clubs within the country, which is the lowest number since 2013, when 227 domestic transfers were involved.

Despite the corona crisis, a total of no fewer than 661 transfers were recorded in this ‘summer’ window. That is only nine fewer than last year, when a record number of 670 players made the switch to or from a Dutch club.

Deadline Day is slower than previous years

Deadline Day was also calmer than previous years. An important reason for this is that the transfer market in the major leagues already closed on Monday evening. The KNVB chose Tuesday 11:59 pm, because that was also the last moment that the clubs had to hand in their player lists for European football.

In the last 24 hours of the transfer market, 32 transfers were completed, ten fewer than last year. TOP Oss was the last club to strike; the club from the Kitchen Champion Division was able to strengthen itself with Youri Loen at 11:59 pm.

PSV was also still productive in the last hours of the transfer market. The Eindhoven team brought Marco van Ginkel back, snatched Bayern Munich midfielder Adrian Fein and staged a big stunt by signing 63-time international Mario Götze for two years.
