Record Arrival of African Migrants to Spanish Canary Islands Raises Concerns

According to the latest figures issued by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, the archipelago received 23,537 migrants from the beginning of the year until October 15, an increase of nearly 80% compared to the same period last year.

During the first two weeks of October, 8,561 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands, a record number since the previous migration crisis in 2006, according to Spanish media.

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said during a visit to the Canary Islands this week that the “increasing” flow of migrants is linked to “destabilization in the Sahel region.”

Migration towards the Canary Islands has increased in recent years due to tightening controls in the Mediterranean.
