Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance produced by the liver and other body cells. The human body needs cholesterol to produce hormones, vitamin D, and bile acids.

Apparently, if you often experience cramps in the hip, thigh, or calf area, it could be a symptom of high cholesterol. These cramps can occur during activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or exercising.

The cramps will generally improve after the activity is no longer carried out. However, it may take a few minutes for the cramps to improve.

Cramping in the thighs, calves and hips is a symptom of peripheral vascular disease, which is a complication of high cholesterol. In peripheral vascular disease (PVD), the blood vessels become narrow, hardened or blocked thereby restricting blood flow to the limbs, most often in the legs.
