Rare visitor to New York: humpback whale visits the Statue of Liberty

In the video: whale in front of Lady Liberty

What a sight! In fact, the Statue of Liberty in New York City is currently closed to visitors. But this very special guest probably wanted to see the “Lady Liberty” anyway and paid her a visit – from the water. Several pictures and videos showed how a humpback whale does its laps in the Hudson River off “Liberty Island”. We show the impressive recordings in the video!

More and more whales are making their way to New York City

The whale is not the first of its kind to have found its way into the “Big Apple” in recent years. On the contrary: the number of whales in the region is growing. According to “ABC News”, this could primarily be due to the increased population of the “menhaden” around New York and New Jersey, a type of herring that the whales particularly like to eat.

Whale Organization urges boats to be careful

According to the Gotham Whale organization, a total of 500 whales were sighted in the region in 2019 alone. In 2011 there were only three – all year round. “Somehow word gets around among the whales that you can eat well in New York,” “ABC News” quoted a spokesman for the organization.

On Twitter, Gotham Whale urged ships and boats on the Hudson River to be extra careful about the whale.
