Researchers call the source of the flashes “FRB 180916.J0158 + 65”. So-called fast radio bursts are emitted every 16.35 days. So far it is unknown who or what is responsible for them. Two theories persist.

Lthey were thought to be unpredictable, erratic and seemingly aimlessly bursting with energy through the universe: so-called fast radio bursts. The cause of the radio flashes is still unknown, and scientists have so far been unable to find out who is emitting the mysterious signals.

A group of international researchers has now made a breakthrough for the first time. The scientists discovered radio flashes using the Canadian radio telescope Chimethat occur in a certain rhythm. This is a small sensation: Up until now, the difficulty in scientifically dealing with the phenomenon has been that there was no logic behind the occurrence of the surge of energy.

The unknown source of the Fast Radio Bursts follows a certain pattern every 16.35 days: for four days, it emits one or two radio flashes every hour, then it falls silent for twelve days. The origin of these flashes is said to be in the spiral galaxy, which is about 500 million light years away and resembles the Milky Way. The researchers call the source of the signals “FRB 180916.J0158 + 65”.

There are different theories about what triggers radio radiation that can be measured from Earth. The most spectacular one says that the radio bursts are radio signals from an extraterrestrial technology. A researcher who has represented this possibility in the past, is the renowned Israeli Harvard physicist Abraham Loeb.

Other theories revolve around neutron stars, objects around 30 kilometers in size that are created by violent explosions of the sun. The Max Planck Society writes: “The neutron stars rotate quickly around their axes and some have extraordinarily strong magnetic fields.” Fast radio bursts could arise during a supernova, the explosive lighting up of stars at the end of their life, but also when two neutron stars merge in a narrow binary star system. when the magnetic fields of the two individual stars collapse, as it were.

But why the mysterious 16-day pattern? On the one hand, the source of the radio bursts could be in the orbit of a black hole, which could result in the signals only escaping from certain positions. On the other hand, the source itself could send out the signal at an exact clock. This, in turn, should bring joy to representatives of the alien theory.

Leon Oostrum from the Dutch Institute for Radio Astronomy told them about the magazine “New Scientist“To consider that aliens would send their message at much shorter intervals” Imagine you get a signal every 16 days. It would take ages to send an entire message. “
