Pumpkin smashes the windshield on Long Island – NBC New York

NEW YORK – A terrifying Halloween prank on Long Island could have had deadly consequences after a pumpkin was thrown from a moving vehicle and crashed into the windshield of another car going in the opposite direction.

The shattered windshield of Nick Costi’s car tells only part of the 22-year-old’s heartbreaking story. He was driving home early Sunday with his girlfriend when Suffolk County Police said someone in a passing car threw the pumpkin out the window.

“As you can see through the glass, it’s pretty serious damage,” Costi said. “Luckily it didn’t pass through the windshield … I’m grateful to be alive.”

The pieces of the pumpkin were found Tuesday along Townline Road in Hauppauge, where the car was hit two days earlier. Surprisingly, neither Costi nor his girlfriend were injured, even though the incident left them shaken.

“When I closed my eyes, I really had no idea if I was alive to be honest with you. So I opened them and I saw some broken glass and I was still moving “, Costi said.” I was scared and I was able to stop immediately “.

Costi’s mother expressed hope that the police find the person responsible, saying she was “shocked that someone did such a thing”.

Suffolk police said if the suspect can be identified, the charges will “definitely” be brought. They’re watching surveillance footage to identify the car involved.

In a similar incident 18 years ago, a Long Island woman nearly died. That time she was a turkey who smashed through the windshield after being thrown from a moving car.

Costi said his father just told him that story and is glad he avoided a similar fate to the victim in that incident.

“It could have been me. I’m glad it wasn’t, “she said.
