Belarusians have been called for the first massive protest against the Lukashenka regime since early 2021. From the very morning the streets of Minsk were cordoned off by columns of military equipment and reinforced by riot police.

The corresponding announcement was posted on the opposition Telegram channel NEXTA.

“The largest Belarusian channels called to gather tomorrow, March 27, at 14:00 in Minsk near Yakub Kolas Square. This action should become the first mass broadcast of Belarusians this year,” the statement says.

In reply investigative committee said he would punish those who respond to the organizers’ calls and support Saturday’s protests. Citizens were warned about criminal liability.

Eyewitness footage testifies that Lukashenka has already surrounded Minsk with echelons of security officials and heavy equipment. In some places, detentions of citizens are already taking place, although the action formally begins at lunchtime.

It is reported that a group of special forces has landed on the territory of Lukashenka’s residence.

In the same area detained Yegor Martinovich, editor-in-chief of the opposition newspaper Nasha Niva, reporter Yekaterina Karpitskaya, and photographer Nadezhda Buzhan. Their car was stopped by traffic police officers and taken to a paddy wagon.

IN Coordination Council the opposition announced the arrest of a member of the main composition of the council Natalya Dulina.

Now people are being detained by men in balaclavas without identification marks. Passers-by are intercepted in the middle of the road and dragged into dark minibuses.

At the same time in Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus claim to be recording “small groups with unregistered symbols.”

Human rights activists have identified 14 detainees.

Elections and protests in Belarus: what happened before

  • On August 9, presidential elections were held in Belarus. According to official data from the CEC, 80.1% of voters voted for Alexander Lukashenko, 10.1% – for his main opponent Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.

  • Lukashenko has repeatedly stated that the situation in Belarus is being shaken from the outside, in particular from Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and the United States.
  • In the European Union did not recognize the election results and decided to impose sanctions against Belarusian officials responsible for falsifying voting results and using violence against dissent.

  • On October 2, the European Union officially imposed sanctions against 40 representatives of the Lukashenka regime, involved in the suppression of peaceful protests and the falsification of the presidential election campaign in Belarus. Lukashenka himself was not on the list.
  • November 6 European Union imposed sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko and 14 Belarusian officials. As indicated on the website of the European Council, in general, sanctions were imposed against 59 people from Belarus. On November 19, EU foreign ministers agreed to begin preparations for the third round of sanctions.
  • 19 countries – Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States of America – supported the creation of an international platform of non-governmental organizations with the aim of bringing to justice the leaders of the regime of Alyaksandr Lukashenka in Belarus.
