Protests continue in Poland against the de facto abortion ban – Abroad – News

Protesters blocked several street intersections in Warsaw, and demonstrations took place in other Polish cities.

The protests in Poland have been going on for 12 days, despite the restrictions imposed on the fight against the new coronavirus.

On October 22, the Polish Constitutional Court ruled that abortion is permanent because of permanent, congenital embryonic defects, including Down’s syndrome and deadly diseases, because the constitution protects the life of every individual.

The court’s decision is a de facto ban on abortion, as the condition rejected by the court is the basis for almost all legal abortions in Poland.

Since the court ruling, the protests have escalated into wider demonstrations against the government. On Sunday, the main organizers of the protests made their demands.

The National Women’s Strike demanded that women be allowed to have abortions if they so wished, to respect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights, increase funding for health care, make a clearer distinction between the church and the state, and increase support for people with disabilities.

There were also separate protests today from those working in the cultural sector, including actors who have been hit hard by the restrictions imposed on Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Matthew Moravecki has repeatedly called for an end to protests to prevent the new coronavirus from spreading.

He called for a negotiating table instead of resolving conflicts in the streets.
