Activists Target Mona Lisa in Shocking Protest

A pair of climate-change activists shocked onlookers at the Louvre Museum in Paris when they hurled pumpkin soup at the iconic Mona Lisa, as captured in a video. The incident, which took place on Jan. 28, 2024, was aimed at highlighting the activists’ concern for a healthy and sustainable food system, leading them to question the prioritization of art over environmental protection.

A Statement from the Environmental Group Behind the Protest

The activists involved in the incident were identified as members of the environmental group “Riposte Alimentaire,” which translates to Food Response. The group issued a statement explaining that the soup-throwing stunt was meant to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect the environment. They argued for the importance of a sustainable food system alongside the preservation of art.

Museum’s Response and Preservation of Mona Lisa

The Louvre Museum immediately responded to the incident, with security staff intervening to protect the artwork. The museum issued a statement condemning the activists’ actions and announced their decision to file a complaint against them. Thankfully, Leonardo Da Vinci’s 16th-century masterpiece remained unharmed, owing to the protective safety glass installed in front of it at the museum.

Previous Attacks on the Mona Lisa and Other Artworks

This is not the first time the Mona Lisa has been targeted by protesters. In 2022, an eco-warrior wearing a wig and lipstick attempted to break through the protective glass and proceeded to throw a cake at the painting in a bizarre incident.

Other acts of aggression against the Mona Lisa and artworks of other renowned artists have also been reported. In 2009, a woman threw a ceramic cup at the painting, and in 2022, protesters targeted Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” at the National Gallery in London, splattering it with Heinz tomato soup. Law enforcement authorities successfully apprehended the individuals responsible for these incidents.
