‘Protect the very young against the harmful effects of the corona crisis’

The first results underline the need to protect the very young. Researchers recently spoke to several key figures at ministries, municipal health services, childcare and obstetric care about the effects of the first corona wave on young families.

“More families have become vulnerable due to increased stress, insecurity about work and the disappearance of, for example, the babysitting help of grandparents”, summarizes director Onno de Zwart of the Verwey-Jonker Institute. “Also, not all emergency facilities have proved to be easily accessible. And that worries him.

First thousand days

According to him, everything should be aimed at not letting young children become the child of the bill. Professor Tessa Roseboom, who published the book De first 1000 days two years ago, agrees. “Those days are the foundation for a child. We know, for example, that children from the hunger winter – also a crisis – more often developed cardiovascular disease as a result of malnutrition. ”

De Zwart: “Before the crisis, midwives asked pregnant women much more about the social situation. During the first lockdown, this contact was necessarily often replaced by video calling, which mainly dealt with the medical situation. We also see this trend in maternity care and among gynecologists. ”

Roseboom and De Zwart argue for the government to take the initiative to ask parties such as youth health care and childcare specifically more attention for families with young children.
