Prof. Ivo Petrov: The plan for 80% occupancy of the beds is disastrous

“I would say that we must support all measures that protect society. In my opinion, what can really protect us at this stage is still timely vaccination. This was shown by statistics from many countries. Including, of course, Israel. Where some say, “Yes, but they also get Omicron.” He said this before Bgonair the cardiologist Prof. Ivo Petrov on the occasion of the adopted new plan against the coronavirus.

The professor added that “they get sick from Omicron, but their mortality is about 15 times lower than ours. That is, when between 85 and 90 people die in Bulgaria, three or four people die in Israel every day. So the plan for 80% bed occupancy, I would say, is disastrous. And I sincerely hope that we do not end up in such a situation. Not for anything else, but because it will be a huge detriment to all other people who need health care. In such a situation, of course, other people will be deprived of health care. Because the great killers of our time are not viruses, but cardiovascular diseases and oncological diseases. “People who suffer from these diseases will suffer even more,” said the cardiologist.

He stressed that patients are afraid to visit doctors.

“Extremely accurate statistics have already appeared. Very soon a huge analysis was published by colleagues from Italy, who gave really extremely interesting data. It is for cardiovascular disease that pandemic weather has been shown to change people’s behavior in terms of health. That is, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, improper diet, a significant reduction in physical activity. And even the closure of fitness centers But this sedentary behavior really leads to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. And what happens do you know when? In the hollow. That is, when another wave passes in the hollow of Kovid’s wave, we see a peak of cardiovascular disease. And especially the complicated cardiovascular diseases “, specified Prof. Petrov, giving details.

“Kovid worsens some of the cardiovascular conditions. Or it may even cause them. This has been proven absolutely categorically. When cardiovascular complications are activated, cardiovascular mortality also increases, which in this case turns out to be very often domestic cardiovascular mortality. Precisely because people were afraid of Kovid’s measures and Kovid’s danger and did not go to the hospital on time. And unfortunately, the health system registers domestic cardiovascular mortality.

Prof. Ivo Petrov again emphasizes the fact that we do not have automatic defibrillators in public places. He reminded that Sofia Municipality has agreed to install automatic defibrillators at major metro stations. “This is really the first step of the pilot project to become not an exception but a rule. As a rule in many European countries and many countries around the world. Moreover, we also have a European directive. I am not saying we are obliged, but we are called, even from a moral point of view, to abide by it. Because it saves lives. “

“There are different criteria and norms. In Japan, for example, there are about 2,500 people with a defibrillator. In France, there is one defibrillator per 4,000 people. We need to adopt one of these practices and change a few sentences in two laws. So that anyone who has witnessed sudden cardiac death can use an automatic external defibrillator.

When asked how defibrillators will be used by non-specialists, Prof. Petrov answered:

“Several companies that are dealing with this issue are ready to educate the population. I’m not telling the specialists, I’m telling the population. That is, the population must be trained. When training the public to use an external defibrillator, this will have a second side effect that is extremely positive. It will mean that people will learn to give first aid when it comes to an emergency medical condition that threatens human life.

“Changes in the law must be introduced by MPs, so I hope this will happen soon,” said the cardiologist.

Regarding the suspended scheduled admissions in hospitals, Prof. Petrov was adamant that “this is a problem because there are different views, in terms of planned admissions. What does planned mean, what does emergency mean. I also affect cardiovascular and oncological diseases. I would not say that a heart – vascular or arrhythmia, or cancer is planned. Because at any moment these conditions can be destabilized. And when they are not treated in time, it turns out that the particular patient is not as planned as one might imagine. In addition, patients are allowed to decide whether they are planned and whether they are urgent, “said the cardiologist.
