Prime Minister of Canada says Ukrainian plane shot down by Iranian missile – aviation

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday his government had information that Ukranian International Airlines (UIA) flight 752 was shot down by an Iranian missile.

Trudeau, who was speaking at a press conference, added that the action “may have been intentional.”

The aircraft, a Boeing 737 from the Ukrainian private airline UIA, took off Wednesday morning from the Iranian capital, Tehran, towards the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

The plane crashed two minutes after takeoff, killing the 176 people (passengers and crew) aboard, mostly of Iranian and Canadian nationality.

At least 63 Canadian citizens were on board. Eleven Ukrainians, including nine crew members, are also among the victims of the crash. Also on the UIA plane were citizens from Sweden, Afghanistan, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Ukraine sent a team of 45 investigators to Tehran to study the causes of the air disaster.
