Prevent astronauts from getting sick Hawaiian squid from being sent to space

JAKARTA – The United States space agency, NASA, brought a dozen squid from the coast of Hawaii to the international space station (International Space Station). A total of 12 squid were transported by the SpaceX spacecraft that departed for the ISS earlier this June. Before leaving, the dozens of squid were kept at the Kewalo Marine Laboratory at the University of Hawaii.

Quoted from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, NASA took the squid into space to examine the impact of space travel on the squid. Jamie Foster Ph.D. Researchers from the University of Hawaii said the research is expected to improve the health of the human body, especially astronauts who work in space.

According to him, squid are living things that have a symbiotic relationship with natural bacteria that help regulate their bioluminescence.

Meanwhile Margaret McFall-Ngai, Professor from the University of Hawaii said the relationship between humans and natural bacteria is changing. Especially when humans are in space and face low gravitational pressure.

He continued, when humans are under low gravitational pressure, there is a disruption or disruption to the symbiotic relationship between humans and bacteria. While on the other hand Jamies Foster saw this was also shown by the relationship of squid with microorganisms.

This research may seem strange at first, considering that most people wouldn’t understand why NASA would want to take squid into space. For Jamie Foster, this research is actually the first step to get information about the impact of low gravity on bacteria and animals.

He continued that the immune system of astronauts would not work properly when in a space environment, compared to when on Earth. This happens because the immune system is experiencing an irregularity.

“When astronauts spend more time in space, their immune system becomes what is called dysregulation. It doesn’t work very well,” he said.

Finally, the immune system does not easily recognize the germs that enter the bodies of the astronauts. This explains why astronauts on space missions sometimes get sick.

The mission to carry the squid is then expected to at least be able to find answers so that astronauts stay healthy while in space. Because relying on the immune system is not the main solution while in space, they will at least be able to make special steps that can make the astronauts’ journey healthier and safer.
