President Duda Announces Plans to Restructure State-Owned Media in Poland, Sparking Conflict with Prime Minister Tusk

Duda announced that X, formerly Twitter Saturday.

The new, more liberal government in Poland wants to restructure state-owned media, and on Wednesday chose to fire all directors of state broadcasters and the PAP news agency.

– State media must first be legally repaired, writes the president, who on Friday accused the reform of being unconstitutional.

The conflict is currently the most serious between Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Duda. Duda is a close ally of the former right-wing nationalist ruling party PiS, which ruled Poland for eight years until earlier in December. PiS received harsh criticism from both the opposition and the EU for turning the media into propaganda channels.

That Duda is on the back foot is potentially a big problem for Tusk. If he casts a veto, this can be overridden by a three-fifths majority in the lower house of the national assembly – but Tusk’s coalition only has 248 out of 460 mandates.
