Position statement: Meghan Markle calls for “a change”

Prince Harry’s wife has broken with the neutrality traditionally attached to monarchies, arguing for a change during the US presidential election.

The 39-year-old American called on her compatriots to collectively exercise their right to vote for the upcoming elections.

Actress Meghan Markle departed Thursday from the neutrality normally attached to members of the British royal family to call for “a change” on the occasion of the US presidential election in November. The star was speaking as part of a panel organized by the NGO “When we all vote”, co-founded by former First Lady Michelle Obama, which aims to push more American voters to the polls.

“I think if you are participating in this event with us, it is because you are just as mobilized and motivated to see the change that we all need and that we deserve,” said Meghan Markle, without calling more clearly to vote against Donald Trump. 74 days before the election that will pit the current president against Democratic candidate Joe Biden, the 39-year-old American has invited her compatriots to collectively exercise their right to vote.

“We are voting to honor those who came before us and to protect those who will follow us.” The actress, who, with her husband has ceased to be an “active member” of the British royal family, had already left her reserve in early June to speak out on the death of George Floyd and more broadly on racism and police violence in the United States.
