The Portuguese Government said on Sunday that it was following with great concern the situation in Venezuela, considering “inadmissible” any “alleged election” held outside the law and democratic rules, alluding to the choice of the new president of the National Assembly.
“We are following with great concern the events that took place today [domingo] in Venezuela, “says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its Twitter social network account.
The Venezuelan parliament was due to elect its new board of directors on Sunday, which would result in the reelection of the deputy and main opponent of President Nicolás Maduro, Juan Guaidó, but the deputy was detained for hours by police and beaten at the door of parliament, while inside, in plenary, the deputies supporting the Venezuelan head of state elected Luis Parra, with the support of a minority of opposition parliamentarians suspected of corruption.
“Any alleged election held outside the law and democratic rules is inadmissible and constitutes a breach of the legitimacy of the National Assembly and a violation of the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people,” the MNE said.
The Portuguese MNE also “vehemently” condemned the violence “perpetrated by security forces against the legitimate Speaker of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, and against opposition deputies, which prevented the free and democratic election of the new National Assembly Board of Directors.”
