Polish army withdraws after accidentally occupying Czech territory NOW

The Polish army is withdrawing from an area in the Czech Republic after military personnel accidentally settled there earlier this month to the dismay of the Czech government.

A high-ranking soldier reports Twitter the Polish army to withdraw from the occupied territory. According to him, there was a misunderstanding and no conscious action.

Poland set up a new border post last month because of the corona measures, reports Politico. This also accidentally blocked a road to a historic chapel, which is located on Czech territory. Czechs were therefore no longer able to visit the chapel. They were also banned from taking photos due to border controls. The ‘invasion’ happened along the Polish-Czech border near the town of Pielgrzymów.

After the Czech authorities informed Poland, the error was quickly resolved. The chapel can now be visited again, reports a spokesman for the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs to national media.

Although this time it was a misunderstanding, the two countries have a history when it comes to border disputes. A short war was fought in 1919 after disagreements over the border, and in 1938 Poland annexed part of the Czech border region.
