(CNN) – A Texas man is accused of killing his pregnant sister, and police say the doorbell camera captured his confession of the crime.
The Travis County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael Egwuagu, a 25-year-old former soccer player at the University of Texas at San Antonio, on Friday on suspicion of stabbing his sister, Jennifer Chioma Ebichi, 32, according to an order of arrest
Detectives spoke with a witness, Linda Mura, who said that Ebichi asked her to go to the house and she arrived to see Egwuagu leave the house, smiling, the order says. He was holding a bloody kitchen knife in his hand and said: “I killed Jennifer,” Mura told detectives, according to the order.
Police said the images in the bell chamber confirmed Mura’s testimony.
The incident occurred in Pflugerville, a suburb of Austin.
Egwuagu was charged with murder and is being held in Travis County Jail with a bail set at $ 500,000, according to KEYE, affiliate of CNN.
Krista A. Chacona, a lawyer from Egwuagu, said it is “a very painful and difficult time for the family.”
“We ask people to respect their privacy and give them time to cry,” Chacona said.
Ebichi’s twin brother, Martin Chinedu Egwuagu, told police that Michael Egwuagu had been making strange statements on the day of his sister’s death. Ebichi had sent a text message to his twin to tell him that Michael Egwuagu was having a crisis, according to the arrest warrant.
Hours later, Ebichi sent a text message to Martin Egwuagu, asking him to go with her. When he arrived, he found Ebichi’s eldest son, covered in blood, standing outside with Mura. He entered the house and found his sister on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood and her youngest son crying, according to the order.
Martin Egwuagu put the children in the care of his wife and then found Michael Egwuagu kneeling in the street, “as if he were praying,” with clothes covered in blood, the order said. The suspect took off his clothes and threw it in the trash, he said.
An autopsy on Saturday showed that Ebichi, who was in her first trimester of pregnancy, died as a result of multiple stab wounds and that her death was a homicide. The fetus died with her.
While a complete wound count was not available, the coroner estimated that he had one to two dozen stab wounds.
