The police were able to arrest two Romanian shoplifters in the center of Mechelen on Wednesday afternoon. The pair are known for previously committed offenses and their vehicle was signaled for being involved in various shoplifting. They were arrested by the investigating judge.

Wednesday afternoon around 4 pm, the Mechelen-Willebroek police received a hit via the ANPR camera network. A passenger car with German number plates, which was signaled for being involved in various shoplifting, was spotted on Brusselsesteenweg. Not much later, the officers were able to find the vehicle. The occupants were no longer in the vehicle, they turned out to have walked towards the city center.

“In the center, the two men move in an atypical way,” says police spokesman Dirk Van de Sande. “When they went back to their vehicle and wanted to leave, they were intercepted and transferred to the police station for further investigation. It concerns two Romanians aged 18 and 39 who are known for previously committed offenses. Clothing was found in the car with the safety label removed. This included T-shirts, shirts and belts. The duo could not provide proof of purchase. ”

The clothing appeared to come from a shop in the Bruul and was confiscated, as was the car the shoplifters were driving. The duo was made available to the public prosecutor’s office and arrested by the investigating judge.
