Playstation 5: Sony postpones concept event due to US protests

The time right now is not suitable for celebrating: with this reason and with a view to the tense political situation in the United States Sony canceled a presentation on Playstation 5 scheduled for Thursday night. “For now, we want to hold back and allow more important voices to speak,” it said in a Twitter message the official Playstation account.

Sony had previously tweeted the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter through the Playstation account, showing solidarity with many protesters who took to the streets against police violence and racism after George Floyd’s death.

In that tweet in the name of the Playstation brand, it was said that systemic racism and violence against the “black community” were condemned. They will work towards a future that is characterized by empathy and inclusion and stand by their “black content creators, players, employees, families and friends”.

Sony’s main account had changed previously positioned similarly clearly. “Our products can be replaced,” wrote the company’s main account. “Is that also possible with life?”

Other game companies have also taken a stand

Originally, Sony wanted to give a preview of the “future of gaming” on Thursday evening, starting at 10:00 p.m. German time. In this context, scenes from new releases were expected for the Playstation 5, which, like the competitor console Xbox Series X, will go on sale during the Christmas season.

The next generation of devices is eagerly awaited by millions of players – but so far there have been very little video footage to see the so-called next-gen consoles. A few weeks ago, the most important industry fair, the E3 in Los Angeles, was canceled due to the corona crisis. The pandemic means that many game events take place exclusively online.
