A person was fatally struck on the E40 in Veurne early on Thursday morning. The body was hit several times on the highway, but the circumstances are very unclear. The E40 was closed at 5.30 am for the observations.
What exactly happened is still very unclear. What is certain is that at 4.15 am there were two cars on the side of the E40 highway towards Jabbeke and the first car, a BMW with British number plates, had lost a front wheel. It was raining heavily and it was dark. At that time, the emergency services were also called to report the traffic accident and where a body was probably spotted on the highway. An ambulance and fire brigade signal car rushed to the scene and came across the body on the highway. The body appeared to have been hit several times.
E40 closed
The person was probably hit several times earlier and the two drivers of the cars collided again at 4.15 am. “Making the determinations is very difficult, because the body is unrecognizable,” the federal highway police said. “Making an identification is virtually impossible. We cannot even determine whether it is a man or a woman. We will close the highway to check whether we can still make observations in complete safety and give the fire brigade the opportunity to clear the highway.”
It is therefore not yet known who the victim is and what he was doing on foot on the E40 and may never become clear.
Because this had to be done over a fairly considerable distance, it was decided to completely close the highway towards Jabbeke at 5.30 am. Traffic had to take the exit in Veurne and return to Oostduinkerke.
