‘Kick Out Zwarte Piet is going to take action every quarter’ | NOW

The action group Kick Out Zwarte Piet (KOZP) is going to take action every three months this year for a racism-free Sinterklaas tradition. That was decided on Saturday during a meeting in Den Bosch, RTL News reports.

“We have discussed many ideas with which we can campaign throughout the year,” says KOZP founder Jerry Afriyie. He did not want to say anything about the content of the campaigns. “Sometimes we will announce them, sometimes it will be a surprise. But we will continue until our goal is achieved.”

The national campaign # 2020ZwartePietVrij wants, according to the agenda invitation of the KOZP meeting, to focus explicitly on mayors, municipalities, shopkeepers and entry committees that have so far expressed their support for Zwarte Piet.

Anti-discrimination agencies can also become targets. “They sometimes stay aloof from the discussion,” says Afriyie. “We want these agencies to speak out against Zwarte Piet on their website. Now they often don’t because they don’t want to get involved in the debate.”

The location of the KOZP Saturday meeting in Den Bosch was kept secret in advance. An earlier meeting of the action group in The Hague last November was disrupted by supporters of Zwarte Piet who destroyed windows and cars and threw fireworks. Five people were then arrested.
