Perlita de Huelva, Arcángel, Argentina and Rocío Márquez, in ‘Música y Mujer’ of the UHU

The Huelva-born cantaora recently recognized with the Andalusian Flag of the Arts, Pearl of Huelva, as well as other music stars such as Arcángel, Argentina and Rocío Márquez, will make up the roster of artists who will debate the image of women in flamenco at the second web meeting of the ‘Music and Women’ project co-organized by the University of Huelva and the strategic communication consultancy CpC – Change to grow.

The meeting will be held at the Zoom platform next Wednesday, April 14, 2021, upon registration in https://bit.ly/MusicaMujer2_UHU, and will be broadcast live on the social networks of the entities that promote the project.

In addition to defending the gender equality and the dignity of women in all social spheres through music, this second online event will continue to transfer to society the results of the projects carried out at the Research Center on ‘Contemporary Thought and Innovation for Social Development’ (COIDESO) of the UHU.

Specifically, the colloquium will revolve around the first conclusions of the investigation ‘La Mujer en el Flamenco’ by the researcher Mariló Camacho-Díaz. The image of women in Huelva flamenco is a project directed by Professor M. Carmen Fonseca-Mora and sponsored by the Cátedra de la Provincia and the Diputación de Huelva through the Vice-Rector’s Office for Innovation and Employability of the University of Huelva.

According to First analyzes of a sample of verses from the 1960s to the present, a positive evolution of the female image is verified at the end of the last century while this evolution seems stagnant today.

The investigation, still ongoing, is analyzing hundreds of flamenco compositions and the metaphors used, considering metaphorical structures as powerful vehicles for the expression of emotions and beliefs for the society that hears and sings them.

Questions about whether we are aware of the effects of the music we consume, about the type of society we build, whether there is a risk of feeding an unwanted image of women when exporting the verses of the first half of the 20th century, or what image of women is desired in flamenco, will be some of the proposals on which the colloquium will revolve on the 14th.

The project ‘Music and women‘launched its series of web meetings on March 25 with the special collaboration of Maribel Quiñones’ Martirio’ and the Huelva-born musician and music producer César López Perea. Following the format of the meetings, personalities from the music industry join representatives of COIDESO’s university research to discuss the influence of music in the construction of values and social beliefs that support or not gender equality. This first meeting is still available at https://youtu.be/C4qesgAhkHw.
