Perfect Storm – Actuall

Inflation, stagnation and lousy government; the worst cocktail

We are living through one of the most difficult times in our recent history. Runaway inflation at 7.6% like many Spaniards have never seen. We are 7.6% poorer. We charge the same but we can buy less. It is called ‘monetary illusion’ and it dilutes that real poverty effect.

But it is not the only one of our ills. The economy is stagnant. The slowdown of the pandemic has not recovered. We are the only OECD economy not to recover pre-pandemic levels. Partly because we are an economy closely linked to services. And partly also because we suffered the worst government in decades; the worst government at the worst time.

Much of our economy was zombie; The pandemic arrived and we maintained it with the artificial respiration of the ICOs and the ERTEs. Those zombie companies have not gone bankrupt because the government legislatively did not allow it, but they were in a comatose state. And when some begin to come out of the tunnel, comes the Russian invasion in Ukraine, the growth of energy prices and the last straw for many businesses.

The fishing fleet remains moored in port; at these fuel prices, it’s not worth it to go fishing. The building could stop in a couple of weeks due to the inflationary spiral of material prices. The countryside manifests itself this Sunday because it can no longer continue working at a loss. And the transport It has been on strike for days threatening the supply chain, the viability of the industry and the risk of shortages of milk and even medicines.

What does the government do? First strategy: meet with supposed interlocutors who do not represent anyone. Failed attempt. Second strategy: the president becomes a ‘Willy Fog’ and goes around the world several times to meet with European leaders to try to reach an agreement at the European Council on March 24 and 25. Late trusts him. It works for the photo. But the fire continues at home.

The last thing is to accuse the striking truckers of being ultra-rightists. Look! How had it not occurred to them before? The insult has ignited the spirits even more. Do they not understand that people express their desperation when they can’t take it anymore? Do they not understand that patience has a limit and mattresses are not eternal? Do they not see that most of our European partners already Have you taken measures while the ‘mattress changer’ is on a European tour and a ‘reality show’?

To make matters worse, the striking truckers take advantage of the impunity granted by the decriminalization of the so-called ‘information pickets’. Perhaps the government has realized that disempowering the police is not such a good idea and that the Citizen Security Law is a serious mistake. Who will put out the fire if the police are handcuffed? There is no good that evil does not come.

The fisherman’s hook

  • Europe, ready to turn off the tap. The EU would be willing to freeze imports of Russian gas. The decision would be an economic blow for Russia but also for the EU, especially for Germany, which would be forced to pay a lot more for its alternative energy bill.
  • Defense, idiot, defense. Our Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, now says that the role that Spain plays in the world involves “high-rise Defense”. It wasn’t the economy, idiot, it was Defense. Germany discovered it and we discovered late and badly that it was not a “superfluous expense”.
  • The Spanish, the most supportive. We Spaniards are the Europeans who show the greatest solidarity with Ukraine and are also the ones who most support Ukraine’s entry into the EU.
