Paris SG Bounces Back with Victory Over Rennes in Ligue 1: Week 8 Recap

Paris (AFP) – Paris SG reacted well after its defeat at Newcastle and returned to the podium by beating Rennes 3-1 on Sunday during the 8th day of Ligue 1, which also saw OM wake up and Lyon remain stuck in the crisis and the depths of the ranking.

Sunday was also unfortunately marked by a serious incident in Montpellier, where the match against Clermont was definitively stopped for a firecracker thrown towards Auvergne goalkeeper Mory Diaw.

The perpetrator was arrested and placed in police custody, while Diaw, taken off the field on a stretcher, will have to undergo examinations on Monday. The Montpellier club, which led 4-2 at the time of the incident, now risks significant sanctions. “It’s a feeling of disgust,” reacted Montpellier President Laurent Nicollin.

A few hours later, PSG, returning to a 4-3-3 system, proved its ability to react by clearly beating Rennes, previously undefeated in the league, a few days after the slap received at Newcastle in the Champions League.

In an open match full of opportunities, it was Vitinha who opened the scoring with a magnificent strike, before a goal signed by Hakimi with a header. After the break, Gouiri brought Rennes back to 2-1, but Kolo Muani immediately gave PSG a two-goal lead by scoring on his first ball.

With this victory, Luis Enrique’s men return to the podium, third, one point behind Nice and two behind leader Monaco.

The Gattuso effect

A little further in the ranking, in 6th place, we find OM, who for their part won a convincing victory against Le Havre (3-0), the first of the Gennaro Gattuso era. The Marseillais had not won since receiving Brest at the end of August.

Two goals in a few minutes from Le Havre captain Sangante (csc, 18th) and Aubameyang (21st) stunned the visitors, who foundered after the definitive exclusion of Rassoul Ndiaye, allowing the Olympians to calmly manage the rest of the match, with a late goal from Sarr (84th) to drive the point home.

This success allows the Marseillais to reassure themselves before the international break and after two setbacks in Paris (4-0) then Monaco (3-2).

“I gathered the players at the end of the game to say thank you for their work and for the game they showed. I am happy with this victory and not having conceded a goal,” said Gattuso, who clearly brought confidence and desire to a team which was inevitably marked by the crisis that the club went through.

Lille catches Lens

While OM seems to be on the mend, Lyon remains in the doldrums and has still not won this season, after its 3-3 draw at home against Lorient.

Victory is Lyon’s dream, while the club is experiencing a disastrous start to the season with five defeats and two draws in seven days. On Sunday, Fabio Grosso’s players believed they could hold on to this first success, leading 3-1 at the break against Lorient, who were still fragile in defense.

Alas: Eli Kroupi Junior, author of his first double (16th, 54th) at barely 17 years old, revived the Merlus, until a poor restart from Mama Baldé offered the equalizing ball to Darlin Yongwa ( 79th). With only three small points, the Lyonnais are 17th.

Lens is not much better ranked (14th) after its 1-1 draw against neighbor Lille in the Derby du Nord.

After their impressive victory against Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday, the Sang et Or perhaps hoped for better, but it was Lille (7th) who struck first with Benjamin André’s opener (45+3). Lens had to wait until the 70th minute to equalize through Deiver Machado.
