Paris confined for three weeks? The opposition denounces an “aberrant” proposal

Emmanuel Grégoire, first deputy mayor of Paris, said Thursday that the city would propose a three-week confinement in the face of the worsening of the Covid-19 epidemic.

They denounce a proposal “without consultation”. Several Parisian opposition officials did not hide their “amazement” after the announcement of the Paris town hall on Thursday evening. The town hall announced Thursday that it wanted to propose a three-week confinement in the capital to fight against the progress of the Covid-19 epidemic.

“We should have been warned a little before. There was no discussion, no consultation,” lamented Philippe Goujon, mayor Les Républicains of the 15th arrondissement on BFMTV.

“Innaceptable” for Rachida Dati

For the elected, this proposal “is akin to a political coup” by Anne Hidalgo. “The Parisians are a little held hostage in a pre-electoral campaign”, tackled the mayor of the district, in reference to the possible candidacy for the next presidential election of the mayor of Paris. “This is a small political maneuver that does not increase its perpetrators,” he added.

In a press release, Rachida Dati, mayor of the 7th arrondissement, denounces for his part “a fait accompli (…) unacceptable when it comes to the health, life and survival of millions of our fellow citizens” .

“It must be consensus”

For the former Minister of Justice, confining the capital for nearly a month as proposed by the Paris town hall is “an aberrant proposition” which “reflects a real contempt for Parisians and their daily suffering”.

“In addition, claiming to confine Paris without taking into account its neighbors is absolute nonsense: the virus does not stop at the gates of the ring road,” says the elected Republicans.

Asked Thursday evening on BFMTV, the mayor of the 17th arrondissement Geoffroy Boulard also regretted the lack of consultation with the mayors of the arrondissement “for more than eight days”.

“I am very astonished and amazed. Three weeks is not nothing (…) it has a huge impact”, he hammered, calling for a discussion: “it must be consensus and it does not is not the method employed by the town hall of Paris “.
