Whether paper, wood, canvas, glass or furniture – no surface is safe from Irene Hofstetter. The 39-year-old paints the various surfaces with acrylic or glass paint, colored pencils and pastel chalk. Her motifs come mainly from the Appenzellerland. There, at the foot of the Alpstein, the painter grew up in a remote farm above Gais.
The family had four cows in the barn. In addition to these, goats in particular are among the preferred subjects of her works, because goats are an integral part of rural Appenzell. The community of Gais even advertises the white goat Laura, to whom a hiking trail with various stations is dedicated. “One of the posts is the painting house in my parents’ land,” says Hofstetter, “where I am represented with a few pictures.” In her home country she has already made a name for herself with her painting.
