Oscar winner Paul Haggis arrested for assault in Italy | News

The director and screenwriter is “suspected of the sexual assault and aggravated assault of a young foreign woman,” the ANSA and AGI agencies quoted Brindisi’s public prosecutor as saying.
Haggis denies the allegations. “Investigate as soon as possible, I am completely innocent,” his Italian lawyer said, according to the agencies.

Haggis, 69, who wrote and directed the Oscar-winning films “Crash” and “Million Dollar Baby”, is said to be the star of the Allora Fest film festival, which begins Tuesday in the city of Ostuni in the province of Brindisi. “The suspect allegedly forced the young woman, whom he had met some time earlier, into sexual relations,” the prosecutor’s office said.

After one of the encounters, the young woman had to receive medical care, the prosecutor’s office said.

In 2018, Haggis was accused of sexual abuse by four women.
